ZAP Refresh: The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Staying Fit

I’ll admit, I’m a closeted lazy person. Or maybe not so closeted… especially when it comes to working out. I’ll make any excuse to get out of a work out. Influenza shot? Bring it on. Sit on hold with Comcast for an hour? Sign me up. A month of laundry? Yes please. Work out? Sorry, I have other plans.

Unfortunately, I’m not getting any younger and my metabolism isn’t getting any faster, so I had to figure out an option that works for me. I’m not a gym person. It’s intimidating, smelly, and I have absolutely no idea what any of the machines do. I’m definitely more of a workout class kind of girl and have tried barre, yoga, dance and more, but nothing has ever made me excited to go back. After many trials and errors, I’ve found three classes that have me, dare I say, excited to work out.

1. Shred 415 This. Is. My. Obsession. It’s a high intensity interval class that combines running on the treadmill and strength training. I avoided the class for years, because I heard it was super intense and difficult. However, after my first class, I was hooked. The lights are dimmed low, so no one can see you sweat. My favorite part is the blaring music – it’s a mix of Britney, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Kanye, Drake and even some Bieber if you are lucky! I’ve never ever been a runner, but the most you’re on the treadmill consistently is 15 minutes. You also get at least one or two walk breaks, so it’s totally doable. I feel stronger and overall healthier after each class.

2. The Pilates Room I’ve taken many Pilates classes at a variety of studios, which I “liked” but never “loved.” Some were too intense (screaming teacher blasting Immortal Technique) or too lax (never broke a sweat). I took a class at The Pilates Room recently and cannot wait go back! The classes are small, so the instructor has time to help perfect your positioning. I felt the burn without feeling like I wanted to quit – a win win for me! I even got the nicest handwritten note following the class from the founder, Kristine. I can’t wait to go back!

3. Title Boxing Club The amount of aggression I’ve pent up over the years is alarming, and all of this was washed away during my first boxing class. Who knew hitting something could be so amazing! The classes at Title are fun from start to finish. From wearing the boxing gloves, to the actual punching and kicking, to the freestyle session, I was a ball of fire and energy the entire time. Grab a fun friend to take a class with you, and it makes it that much better. My abs killed from punching / laughing so hard. And afterward you feel like you could conquer the world!
